  Hi Guys, Even though I was a machine toolist to trade many moons ago, I’m having trouble sharpening my chisels. I bought a Record WG200 along with jigs, great deal. Following the instructions given and videos I still have issues with the sharpness. Roughing gouge is the worse one to get right, I can use them to cut but frequently have to sharpen them. I suppose as a machine toolist, we used carbide lozenges so no need to sharpen. Any tips would be great guys or I might be buying carbide chisels!

  I use a belt sharpening system so not a lot of experience with grinders, but threw my own mistakes I have found out how important it is to get a good horseshoe before you work the cutting edge and them make sure there are no shadows on the cutting edge I.e.sharpened fully. Again not the same system but have a look at the youtube video by Robert Sorby, the title is Robert Sorby Proedge hints and tips. You should be able to adjust for your system.

  Dig deep and get yourself a Robert Sorby pro edge. Single best investment after my lathe that I have got. Perfect sharpen effortlessly and accurately every single time. Once you have got the perfect edge shaped it literally takes seconds to sharpen every time you need to.

  Drew, are they coming off the grinder sharp and cutting cleanly when freshly sharpened? You may not have a sharpening problem, tools need sharpened frequently, especially depending on the steel and the material being cut. Even with great steel, I sharpen my negative rake scrapers after 30 seconds of use or so just to keep the bur perfect.
