I have this problem a lot Paul!! The easiest and quickest way to do this is by using a small hand plane, it takes far less time and effort than using sandpaper which is what I always used to do. Making sure your tools are nice and sharp is a good way to try and avoid the burn in the first place though ? Hope this helps you out Paul.
