Have only just started woodturning and although self teaching, well, thanks to all the you tube videos, I am having a lot of semi retirement fun, I have quickly come to the fact that I could do with some type of formal instruction, but, again at 67 and semi retiered, costs are a consideration.. So, what would you suggest would be the best way forward.
Hey Brian, Happy days, welcome to the forum . Love woodturning its so relaxing . I have the Record Power CL4. i would try looking on ebay for a second hand lathe there are many on there mate. if not and you want a new one i would try a little bench top like the DML 250 form record power
Hiya Brian, I’d suggest checking to see if there are any woodturning clubs in your area…I know there are one or two around mine. Also check in with Axminster, I believe there are going to be opportunities to learn the basics of a craft with them soon too.

Hey Guys, Thank you both, Huey, yep Kent woodturners seems to be my nearest ( bu a 40 min trip each way so not “local”) but your right, there will be a load of experience I can learn from rather than trying to learn it all from books and you tube..Guys at Axminster sittingbourne have been fantastic and just had my three hour turning taster session.
NIck I have always worked with wood in building DIY fitted wardrobes, wendy houses etc things of that nature and loved working wood on a lathe back in schooldays..I find it totally absorbing.. as for relaxing, great fan of your videos but some are a little scary lol.. The huge log that walked your lathe across the room was not what I would call relaxing but great end product.. Thank you both again guys.. looking forward to being part of a great forum.
Hi Brian
Like the others, I’d strongly advice joining a local club or getting some coaching. I learned so much from attending an adult education centre for about 12 weeks on monday evenings. For things like proper usage of bowl gouges and skew chisels, I really think it was worthwhile.
I started with an eBay special, a RP DM24 which I’ve long since upgraded to a coronet herald.
I find checking out people like Frank Howarth, Jim Overton and your man Mr Z great for inspiration.
Brian I’d also recommend checking out the Men’s Shed organisation. They have hundreds of groups set up around the UK (you can search for one near you here: https://menssheds.org.uk/find-a-shed/). They often have good quality tools that you can go along and try. You can usually bring your own projects along, as well as get involved in bigger group projects if they take on commissions. They’re good social gatherings too!

Worth doing a web search in your area for lessons, I had a full day with Steve Giles, not in your area but very reasonable for a full day one to one, and learnt a ton of things. They will also Taylor to your requirements. Also you have a full day to ask questions.
